ABOUT US

The Welford and Weston Local History Society was formed at a public meeting in December 1969, attended by 29 villagers. The annual subscription was set at ten shillings.

In the beginning meetings were held in the school hall, where coffee was provided from thermos flasks and crockery loaned by Mrs Grey, the vicar’s wife.

In the early days much emphasis was placed on recording and photographing the village and the local area, and the first speaker was the County Archivist.

At the AGM in 1972 “the criticism was advanced that the meeting was dull. It was pointed out that this was a business meeting primarily and that research and not entertainment remained the prime purpose of the society”. This policy proved to be unsustainable in the longer term.

Over recent years we moved from being a membership organisation to being event driven, and broadened the scope of activities to offer a wider range of topics of interest to participants. This has been successful, with increased attendance and an improved financial position giving us the motivation to develop the society in new ways.
